Ebook About
A single photograph—an exceptionally rare “action shot” documenting the horrific final moment of the murder of a family—drives a riveting process of discovery for a gifted Holocaust scholarIn 2009, the acclaimed author of Hitler’s Furies was shown a photograph just brought to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The documentation of the Holocaust is vast, but there are virtually no images of a Jewish family at the actual moment of murder, in this case by German officials and Ukrainian collaborators. A Ukrainian shooter’s rifle is inches from a woman's head, obscured in a cloud of smoke. She is bending forward, holding the hand of a barefooted little boy. And—only one of the shocking revelations of Wendy Lower’s brilliant ten-year investigation of this image—the shins of another child, slipping from the woman’s lap.   Wendy Lower’s forensic and archival detective work—in Ukraine, Germany, Slovakia, Israel, and the United States—recovers astonishing layers of detail concerning the open-air massacres in Ukraine. The identities of mother and children, of the killers—and, remarkably, of the Slovakian photographer who openly took the image, as a secret act of resistance—are dramatically uncovered. Finally, in the hands of this brilliant exceptional scholar, a single image unlocks a new understanding of the place of the family unit in the ideology of Nazi genocide.

Book The Ravine: A Family, a Photograph, a Holocaust Massacre Revealed Review :

“The Ravine”, by Wendy Lower, is not a book you read for the fun of it. Subtitled “A Family, a Picture, a Holocaust Massacre Revealed”, it is the story of a Holocaust picture of a Jewish family - a mother and 2 little children - at the moment of their murders in Nazi-occupied village in Ukraine in 1941. Lower, a professor and author, was shown the picture at US Holocaust Museum and decided to track down both the victims and the perpetrators. Of course, the victims were dead and most of the perpetrators long gone, too, but Wendy Lower wanted to give these mostly unidentified people an identity they lacked after the “Aktion” took place. Not all killings of Jews, Roma, and others were done in the death camps of Eastern Europe. The “killing fields” were all over what is now Poland, Ukraine, the Baltics, and Belarus, among other countries. There are maps which give these locations, mostly outside of small towns and villages. The German occupiers would set up these executions after identifying who was to be killed and making the victims dig their own mass graves, but local talent often carried out the actual murders. Could you stand a few inches away from someone and shoot them at point blank range? The “ability” to do this is not explained by Wendy Lower, but I assume most people reading this review will have considered the question.Lower spent a few years researching where this particular “killing field” was located, Miropol, Ukraine. By 2018, the Jews of Miropol were long gone but several old Ukrainians remembered the slaughter from 1941. Lower was able to make a probable identification of the three noted in the picture. She was also able to identify the Ukrainian photographer who sent the pictures he took to resistance sources and he also joined the resistance against the Germans.Wendy Lower’s book is incredibly well written. She also has written a book about Nazi women called “Hitler’s Furies” that I haven’t read, but I think I’ll add it to my list.
The Ravine: A Family, A Photograph, A Holocaust Massacre Revealed is by Wendy Lower. I picked up this book because there was going to be a Zoom interview with Wendy Lower on and I wanted to be able to have an idea about what she was going to talk about. However, there was a delay on the book so I went into the interview cold. Thus, I was ready to read the book when it finally came. The book is well written and I did not find any misprints or misspellings. I did find that I could not read this book in one sitting; but had to break it up at first because the content was too disturbing. The horror of the massacres being held and so many people so needlessly killed in such a barbaric way had to be digested in small bits. It wasn’t the way it was described as I have read worse in reading about the Holocaust, it was just that it was done. There is also the use of the photographs in this series that made it more like I was there watching it. The use of photographs is definitely more revealing than just the description. That is why they are so effective. In 2009, while working on another research project on the Ukraine in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, a Museum expert on the Ukraine approached her with a photograph and wondered if she could shed any light on the photograph for the journalists from Prague who had brought the photograph in. They knew it was of the massacre on October 13, 1041 in Miropol, Ukraine. It showed five men in different uniforms with two of them showing rifles. They had shot a woman who was now bent over a pit. She was holding the hand of a small boy who was barefooted and as it turned out, was leaning over another child. It was of the last seconds before she fell into the pit. Wendy then goes on to go through the process of finding out who the men were and who the woman was with the two children. The process is very detailed and uncovers quite a bit of information into the massacres in the Ukraine as well as information as to the identity of the woman and two children. She also uncovers the identity of the photographer and something about why he was there and what happened to him after taking the photographs as well as how he managed to control ownership of them. It took her 19 years to complete her investigation and publishing of the book. Following her forensic investigation of the archive materials in the United States, the Ukraine, Israel, Germany, and Slovakia is fascinating.I highly recommend the book to others who are interested in the Holocaust and in more than memoirs.
